Hi, this is Steve from the Sacred Heart Branch for Citizens Alliance Agency.
Homeowners often assume all water damage is treated the same by their insurance — but that’s not true. Two of the most commonly confused protections are water backup coverage and flood insurance. Knowing the difference can save homeowners thousands in out-of-pocket costs.
What Is Water Backup Coverage?
Water backup coverage protects you when water backs up into your home from interior drains or sewer systems.
Typical Triggers
This coverage applies when water comes from:
Sewers backing up into your basement
Drains in sinks, tubs, or toilets backing up
Water pushing up through a sump pump pit
Common Causes:
✔ Heavy rains overwhelming sewer lines
✔ Clogged sewer or drain systems
✔ Sump pump failure during storms or power outages
What It Usually Covers:
Damage to finished basements
Flooring, walls, and personal property damaged by the backup
Cleanup and repair related to the backup
Note: This is often available as an endorsement (add-on) to standard homeowners insurance — not included by default.
What Is Flood Coverage?
Flood insurance provides protection when water from outside the home flows in, whether that’s from natural flooding or runoff.
Typical Triggers
Flood coverage applies when water enters your home due to:
Rising rivers or lakes
Heavy rain causing surface water to pool
Coastal storm surge
Melting snow and ice runoff
Where It’s Purchased
Flood insurance is usually purchased through:
National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)
Some private flood insurers
It’s separate from standard homeowners insurance and generally must be added well before a loss occurs.
