Health Insurance Is Expensive — But Going Without Can Cost You Even More

Hello all! It’s Jesse, your friendly neighborhood insurance agent, and I’d like to have an honest conversation with you about health insurance.

It’s expensive. There really isn’t any way around saying that.

Every year, I talk with people who are frustrated when they see what their health insurance is going to cost. Premiums go up, deductibles seem higher, and sometimes it feels like you’re paying more and getting less.

I understand the frustration.

When you’re healthy and rarely visit the doctor, it’s easy to look at that monthly premium and think,

“Why am I paying all this money for something I hardly ever use?”

That’s a fair question.

But here’s what I always encourage people to think about before deciding to go without health insurance:

Health insurance isn’t really about what happens when you’re healthy. It’s about what happens when you’re not.

None of Us Know What’s Coming

Most of us go through life assuming we’re going to be okay. We go to work, take care of our families, pay our bills and keep moving forward.

We don’t wake up thinking, “I wonder if I’m going to have a major medical emergency today?”

But that’s exactly why unexpected medical problems can be so financially devastating.

You can be perfectly healthy today and find yourself in an emergency room tomorrow. An accident can happen. You can develop an illness you never saw coming. You might need surgery, expensive medication or months of treatment.

Nobody plans for those things.

But that’s what insurance is for.

We don’t buy homeowners insurance because we expect our house to burn down. We don’t buy auto insurance because we expect to get into an accident.

We buy those policies because we can’t afford the consequences if something does happen.

Health insurance is no different.

Rising Premiums Are a Real Problem

I don’t want to pretend that rising premiums aren’t a problem. They are.

Families are balancing mortgages, groceries, utilities, car payments and everything else that comes with everyday life. When health insurance costs go up, something has to give.

But instead of asking, “Can I afford health insurance?”, I think we should be asking:

“What kind of health insurance can I afford while still protecting myself?”

Those are two very different questions.

There may be different plans, coverage levels or financial assistance options worth exploring. A higher deductible with a lower premium might make sense for some people. The important thing is to look at your options before simply deciding to go without.

Protect Yourself Before You Need It

If your health insurance premium increases, don’t immediately cancel your coverage.

Take a breath. Review your options. Ask questions. Make sure you understand what you’re giving up before making that decision.

Going without health insurance may save you money today, but it can expose you to enormous financial risk tomorrow.

You insure your house. You insure your car. You insure the things that are important to you.

Your health — and your financial future — deserve that same protection.

So before you decide that health insurance is simply too expensive, take the time to see what other options are available.

Because you’re not just paying for a health insurance card.

You’re paying for protection against one of life’s biggest financial unknowns.

And sometimes, that’s worth paying for — even when the price isn’t easy.
