Hey everyone, it’s Candice Freese – one of the agents at Citizens Alliance Agency (CAA).
Before diving into some helpful tips, take a moment to learn how not to cook a turkey—courtesy of Citizens Alliance Agency and the Clara City Fire Department!
🦃 Turkey Fryer Safety Tips
Fry outdoors, away from buildings. Set up your fryer on a flat surface at least 10 feet from your home, garage, or wooden deck.
Thaw the turkey completely. Ice or water in a partially frozen bird can cause oil to splatter or overflow, leading to fire.
Measure oil properly. Before adding oil, place the turkey in the pot and fill with water to find the right level. Remove the bird and mark the water line—then dry everything thoroughly before adding oil.
Monitor the temperature. Use a thermometer to keep oil between 325°F and 350°F. Overheated oil can ignite.
Never leave the fryer unattended. Stay close and keep children and pets away from the fryer area.
Keep safety gear nearby. Have a fire extinguisher rated for grease fires (Class K) on hand. Never use water to extinguish an oil fire.
🛡️ Insurance Tips for Fryer Mishaps
Check your homeowners’ insurance. Most policies cover fire damage—even from cooking accidents. But coverage may vary depending on negligence or setup.
Document your setup. Take photos of your fryer location and safety precautions. This can help if you need to file a claim.
Understand liability coverage. If someone is injured on your property, liability insurance can help cover medical costs and legal fees.
Consider umbrella insurance. For extra protection beyond your homeowner’s policy, umbrella coverage can help if damages exceed your limits.
Review your policy before the holiday. Make sure your coverage is up to date and includes fire-related incidents. If you're unsure, contact your insurance agent for a quick review.
Frying a turkey is bold, flavorful—and totally doable with the right precautions. Stay safe, stay insured, and enjoy a crispy, golden Thanksgiving feast.
