Medicare Open Enrollment is almost here.

Each year, Medicare beneficiaries have the opportunity to review their health coverage and determine whether their current plan still meets their needs. While Open Enrollment doesn't begin until October 15, now is the perfect time to start preparing.

Taking a little time now can help make the enrollment process less stressful and ensure you're ready to make informed decisions when the enrollment period begins.

What Is Medicare Open Enrollment?

Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7 each year.

During this time, individuals enrolled in Medicare can:

  • Review their current coverage

  • Compare available plan options

  • Change Medicare Advantage plans

  • Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan

  • Return from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare

  • Review and change prescription drug coverage

Any changes made during Open Enrollment generally take effect on January 1 of the following year.

Why Is It Important to Review Your Coverage?

Many people enroll in a plan and assume it will remain the best option year after year. However, plans can change annually.

Items that may change include:

  • Monthly premiums

  • Deductibles

  • Copays

  • Prescription drug formularies

  • Provider networks

  • Additional benefits

Even if you're happy with your current coverage, reviewing your options each year can help confirm that your plan still aligns with your healthcare needs and budget.

Four Things to Review Before October 15

1. Review Your Current Health Needs

Think about how your healthcare needs may have changed over the past year.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I been diagnosed with any new conditions?

  • Am I visiting specialists more frequently?

  • Have my prescription medications changed?

  • Do I anticipate any procedures or treatments in the coming year?

Understanding your current healthcare needs can help guide your plan review.

2. Make a List of Your Current Medications

Prescription drug coverage is one of the most important factors to consider during Open Enrollment.

Before October 15, create an updated list of:

  • Prescription medications

  • Dosages

  • Pharmacy preferences

Since drug coverage can change from year to year, having this information readily available can make the review process much easier.

3. Confirm Your Doctors and Providers

If maintaining access to your current healthcare providers is important, now is a good time to begin reviewing provider participation and plan options.

Provider networks can vary between plans, making this an important piece of the decision-making process.

4. Gather Questions Ahead of Time

Many people feel overwhelmed simply because they don't know where to begin.

Writing down questions in advance can help make conversations more productive.

Common questions include:

  • What plan options are available to me?

  • Will my prescriptions still be covered?

  • What changes are expected next year?

  • How do Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans differ?

  • What should I consider when comparing plans?

There are no bad questions when it comes to understanding Medicare.

Don't Wait Until the Last Minute

The Open Enrollment period lasts several weeks, but many people find it beneficial to begin gathering information before enrollment officially begins.

Starting early allows you to:

  • Understand your options

  • Avoid last-minute decision making

  • Schedule time to discuss questions

  • Feel more confident about your choices

The more prepared you are before October 15, the smoother the process can be.
